Artika International was established by Mika Nishimura in 2005.

Mika was born in Kyoto, where her grandfather and great-grandfather used to produce yuzen-zome kimono textiles. But her own career path took her into television, producing and directing arts programs for SBS TV in Australia for 12 years. A central focus was work that bridges cultures.

Knowing of her ambition to establish a business linking Japan and Australia, internationally celebrated chef Tetsuya Wakuda approached Mika to supply him with Japanese red-pine sheets for use as a placemats in his restaurant.

Tetsuya's generous gesture gave Mika the impetus to set up Artika International.

The 2006 spring/summer collection of Akira Isogawa, one of Australia's leading fashion designers, included shibori textiles sourced and produced by Artika International in collaboration with Japan's top shibori artisans. The silk shibori scarves and other accessories are now available from our online shop.
